There is no single universal figure. The maximum part diameter a cnc turning center can machine depends on the machine's class and design — a compact Swiss-type lathe tops out at bar stock around 38 mm, a standard production turning center typically handles 400 to 600 mm, and heavy-duty or vertical turning centers can swing workpieces measured in meters. For buyers and engineers, the practical question is not the industry-wide maximum, but which specification on a given machine decides whether your part fits. Turning equipment falls into broad classes, and each class has a realistic upper diameter limit:

Most precision turned parts in commercial and industrial work — hydraulic fittings, motor shafts, sensor housings, medical components — fall well under 500 mm, which is why mid-size turning centers make up the bulk of capacity at most job shops.
When you read a turning center's spec sheet, three numbers decide the largest diameter you can machine:
Swing over bed. This is the maximum diameter that can rotate over the bed without hitting anything — measured from the spindle centerline to the bed ways, times two. It is the headline capacity figure, but it can be misleading on its own.
Swing over carriage (cross-slide). The carriage sits above the bed, so the diameter that clears it is always smaller — often 60 to 80 percent of the swing over bed. For any part longer than the gap near the headstock, this is the number that governs. A machine advertised with a 500 mm swing may only turn 350 mm over the carriage, so always confirm both figures.
Chuck size and spindle bore. The chuck must physically grip the workpiece, and bar-fed work must pass through the spindle bore. A large-diameter ring can be fixtured on a faceplate even when it exceeds the chuck, but a solid bar cannot exceed the bore. Workholding choice — three-jaw self-centering chuck, four-jaw independent chuck, or faceplate — is part of the capacity conversation, not an afterthought.
