    A vertical spindle surface grinder turns the wheel on end: the spindle stands perpendicular to the table, and the wheel grinds with its face rather than its edge. Cup-shaped, cylinder, or segmented wheels are typical. The table either reciprocates or, in the best-known arrangement, rotates beneath the wheel, a process widely known as Blanchard grinding.

    The contact area here is the entire face of the wheel, so each pass covers a wide swath of the part. That large contact zone removes stock quickly and efficiently, which makes vertical spindle machines the usual choice for big, flat plates and heavy stock removal. The process leaves a characteristic cross-hatch pattern on the surface; the pattern is cosmetically appealing and helps retain lubricant where two surfaces slide against each other. The trade-off is that the finish is generally rougher than what a horizontal spindle machine produces, so vertical grinding is often used for roughing or for parts whose finish requirements are less demanding.

    • Does the part have features besides a flat plane? Slots, steps, and shoulders generally require a horizontal spindle wheel that can reach into them.
